High mast tower replacement project prompts overnight traffic closure along Dick Collins Road

Omaha, Nebraska – The Nebraska Department of Transportation has announced a temporary overnight road closure tied to ongoing improvements along the I-680 corridor. Officials say the work is part of a larger effort to upgrade lighting infrastructure and improve safety for drivers traveling through the area.

Overnight Closure Scheduled

Weather permitting, Dick Collins Road will be closed between N 31st Street and John J. Pershing Drive beginning Sunday, March 1 at 7 p.m. The closure is expected to remain in place until 6 a.m. Monday, March 2. Transportation officials stated that the overnight shutdown is necessary so crews can safely remove an existing high mast tower light and install new lighting equipment.

The work is part of the I-680 High Mast Tower Replacement project, which focuses on modernizing roadway lighting to improve visibility and safety for motorists. According to NDOT, construction for the project is anticipated to be completed by spring 2026.

Drivers traveling in the area should plan alternate routes and allow extra travel time during the closure window. NDOT is reminding motorists to remain alert when traveling near construction zones and to follow posted detours and signage.

Officials also emphasized basic safety reminders for anyone driving near work crews. Motorists are urged to slow down, buckle their seat belts, and avoid distractions behind the wheel.

By upgrading lighting systems and maintaining safe work zones, transportation leaders aim to enhance roadway safety and ensure better visibility for drivers well into the future.
