State data shows increase in January traffic fatalities across Nebraska roadways
Lincoln, Nebraska – The Nebraska Department of Transportation has released its January 2026 traffic fatality report, revealing a sobering start to the year on Nebraska roadways. According to the data, 19 people lost their lives in traffic crashes during the month, underscoring ongoing safety challenges across the state.
These fatalities occurred in 15 separate crashes. Officials noted that seatbelt use remains a significant concern. Of the 17 vehicle occupants killed, eight were not wearing seatbelts, seven were using a seatbelt, and two had usage listed as unknown. Transportation officials continue to stress that seatbelt use is one of the most effective ways to reduce fatal injuries in crashes.
Rural roads and local routes see most fatalities
The majority of fatal incidents occurred outside urban areas. Thirteen of the fatalities happened in rural locations, highlighting the dangers often associated with higher speeds, longer emergency response times, and varying road conditions.
There were zero fatalities reported on interstate highways. However, nine deaths occurred on other highways, and ten fatalities took place on local roads.
Pedestrian safety also remains a concern, with two pedestrian deaths recorded during the month. In addition, one fatal crash involved a train, demonstrating the wide range of roadway hazards that can lead to tragic outcomes.
Winter weather played a role in at least one deadly incident. Icy road conditions contributed to a crash that resulted in two fatalities, reminding drivers of the added dangers presented by seasonal weather.
Comparing recent years
The January total of 19 fatalities represents an increase compared with January 2025, when 14 deaths were recorded. Compared with January 2024, which saw 20 fatalities, the 2026 figure is slightly lower. Historical comparisons show nine fatalities in January 2023 and 24 in January 2022. The average for January between 2022 and 2025 was 17 fatalities.
Officials urge drivers to remain vigilant, buckle seatbelts, adjust speeds for winter conditions, and stay alert for pedestrians and trains at crossings. The department provides a daily fatality count online at ndot.info/tollcompare, allowing residents to monitor roadway safety trends.
Transportation leaders emphasize that every fatal crash represents a preventable loss. By practicing safe driving habits and remaining aware of roadway conditions, motorists can help reduce risks and protect lives on Nebraska roads.
